Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd.’s “Ki-Monogatari Wood-Cased Color Pencils (12-Color Set)”—featuring paper packaging that was released in October 2025—won the “Package Design Award” (one of the Packaging Technology Awards) at the “2026 Japan Packaging Contest” organized by the Japan Packaging Institute (JPI).

We designed this paper case for colored pencils, while Crestec Corporation (President: Takeomi Kurisawa) handled the packaging engineering. An eco-friendly package that shifts away from traditional materials like metal tins to an all-paper construction. The design incorporates numerous innovative ideas—such as utilizing the corrugated structure (fluting) of cardboard to create the pencil-holding tray (see photo, top right)—to secure the pencils in place. We jointly submitted this product to the 2026 Japan Packaging Contest, where it received recognition.

“Color Pencils: Ki-Monogatari 12-Color Set” comes in a kraft paper case. Weighing approximately 100g, it is more than 30% lighter than the previous tin-packaged version (based on total weight). The case measures 115mm (width) x 14mm (thickness) x 196mm (length), featuring a slim, efficient profile. It also stands out for the natural feel and texture of the kraft paper.
